Now that our oldest is into holidays and is loving the joys of this season, we wanted to start some new traditions that we can carry on with us for many years to come.

We want her to learn that Christmas is not just about receiving gifts and going to sit on Santa’s lap for a photo, but it’s much more than that. It is about Jesus and his birthday, and what Him being sent to us means for our lives.

Forrest and I have been reading the Christmas story (and other Christmas books) with our daughters and reiterating as much as we can the meaning of Christmas.

I would never take the fun out of Christmas, because the joy of decorating the tree, driving around at night to find lights, picking out gifts for our loved ones, singing Christmas songs, going to see Santa come down in a helicopter in our town, spotting our elf on the shelf each morning, etc. is SO MUCH FUN!

This year, after a suggestion from a friend, we made our own Homemade Advent Calendar. We have mixed in lots of Christmas crafts, doing acts of kindness, donating clothes, watching Christmas movies, hot chocolate and cookie dates, baking, going to see a nativity scene, etc… Our oldest daughter who is old enough to somewhat understand (almost 2.5) is enjoying finding out what the next card will hold in our count down to Christmas!

Also, in case you’re curious, we ordered these push pins + we are using them for this and for hanging our Christmas cards. Aren’t they so cute?
